The dial signed Jno. Hallifax, Barnsley, Invt & Fecit on a silvered disc in the arch above the silvered 'chapter ring' calibrated with concentric scales and with counter-poised blued steel hand, foliate engraved center and dial-plate within a wheatear-engraved border, the case in the style of a longcase clock with moulded and tapered base, the trunk with central roundel applied with a silvered recording ring engraved with the same calibrations as the dial and with blued steel hand, the hood with elaborate caddy top with two urn finials

John Hallifax, Barnsley, b. 1694 Springthorpe, Lincs., removed to Barnsley and established as clockmaker 1711, d. 1750

This peculiar style of barometer was almost exclusive to the Hallifax workshop. Being a clockmaker by trade he housed his barometers in in cases modelled on longcase clocks. A similar example was sold in these rooms in the Samuel Messer Collection, 5 Dec 19891, lot 12
