Lot Essay

This oval 'medallion' frame is fluted in the 'antique' manner and festooned with ribbon-tied 'poetic' laurel, a motif associated with the Louis XV 'Grecian' fashion of the late 1750's. Related berried-laurel garlands appear on a pair of pier-glasses supplied by Thomas Chippendale for the Music Room at Harewood House (see: C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, fig. 289)
