Lot Essay

Its fluted frame, inlaid frieze 'tablet' of a drapery-festooned patera, and flower-poesy 'medallion' inlaid amongst 'cubes on their angles' on the top, combine the George III 'antique' style as introduced by the architect Robert Adam (d. 1792) with the contemporary taste for 'French' marquetry, as featured on the tables supplied for Adam's drawing room at Audley End, Essex, by Messrs. Gordon and Taitt in 1771 (fl. 1748 - 96) (see: P. J. Drury and I. Gow, Audley End Guidebook, 1984)
