The design of these chairs is that of the set of ten 'neat bamboo chairs' made for William Drake of Shardeloes, Buckinghamshire, by John Linnell in 1767. The present whereabouts of the set is unknown. Variants exist, usually with a waved toprail and dished seat. John Linnell received over #1,000 for the re-furnishing of Shardeloes between 1765 and 1768 (see: H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, London, 1980, vol. I, pp. 96-102 and vol. II, p. 33, pl. 58). It is clear that such chairs were high fashion in the late 1760's. In June 1768 Sir Gilbert Heathcote purchased from Thomas Chippendale '6 India Back and arm Chairs japand to imitate the Bamboe...' for Normanton Hall at a cost of #9 9s 0d (C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. 1, pp. 249-250). A simulated bamboo settee of similar design was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 19 April 1990, lot 63
