Lot Essay
The Earl of Kerry artist's table that is lot 136 in this sale has provenance that significantly strengthens the attribution to Mayhew and Ince of this small group. The present lot is significantly more ornate than the Kerry table and in this respect is closely resembles the table in the Noel Terry Collection at Fairfax House, York (see: P. Brown, The Noel Terry Collection of Furniture and Clocks, York, 1987, p. 103, no. 102). The pierced fretwork frieze and blind fret-carved ratchet-supports are as characteristic of the designs in the Universal System as the cluster columns that are common to both tables. The Terry table is stated in the Collection Catalogue to have come from the Collection of Sir Sydney Greville. This is probably a confusion with the present lot which is labelled as being in that collection in R. Edwards & P. Macquoid, op.cit..
