The splayed 'gothic' railing with alternate quatrefoil and cross-bar frets appears as a 'voider' tray pattern in Messrs. Ince & Mayhew's, Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl. XV. With its bold scrolled tripod base supporting an acanthus-wrapped stem it relates to a mid-18th Century kettle-stand in the collection of Lord Plender, illustrated in R. W. Symonds, Masterpieces of English Furniture, 1940, fig. 17.
A related tripod stand, with vase-shaped stem supporting an octagonal top with fretted railing, was exhibited by Mr. F. Skull at the British Antique Dealers Exhibition, 1928. (R. W. Symonds, 'Art Treasures at the Grafton Gallery', Old Furniture, vol. iv, 1928, p.75.
A related tripod tea-table is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, Rev. Ed. 1954, p. 205, fig. 9.
