The present picture was regarded as the work of Gerrit Willemsz. Horst until the monogram of Jacques des Rousseaux was revealed by cleaning c.1983.

Professor Sumowski points out that the model for the younger man also posed for Jacques des Rousseaux's Young Man wearing a Gorget of 1630 (Sumowski, op. cit., IV, no.1675b, illustrated p.2511). The old man is the Leyden model known as 'Rembrandt's father' who was used around the years 1630-1 by Rembrandt and painters from his circle such as Lievens and Dou (see, for instance, the picture sold in these Rooms, 14 Dec. 1990, lot 111)
