Lot Essay

Constable, judging from a photograph, describes the present picture as a good studio version of the painting in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen (his no.161 and pl.36); eight other versions are listed as products of Canaletto's school. Constable curiously states that the present picture 'follows the Windsor picture or the Visentini engraving exactly'; there are, in fact, extensive differences in the boats and figures
