Thomas Dawson (1725-1813), created Baron Dartrey in 1770, Viscount Cremorne in 1785 and Baron Cremorne in 1797 (all in the Irish peerage), of Dawson's Grove, County Monaghan, Ireland (his seal on the reverse; this shows his arms quartered with those of his first wife, Anne, daughter of Thomas Fermor, 1st Earl of Pomfret, whose death in 1769 thus provides a terminus ante quem for the acquisition of the present picture)
