Lot Essay

The original, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Orléans, has been in France since c.1649. The present picture omits strips along all sides of the prototype, including the basket prominent in the foreground; Posner points out that it must thus have been executed before 1695/1710 when the Orléans painting, having been folded over the stretcher, was returned to its original size
