Lot Essay

This watercolour is a study for the drawing sold at Sotheby's (16 Nov. 89, lot 123). The House was built for the Colonial Secretary Philip Anstruther, and was later taken over by Andrew Nicholl's Patron, Sir James Emerson-Tennent, who described it thus: 'It stands on the ridge of a projecting headland, commanding a wide prospect over the Gulf of Maunar, and in the midst of a garden containing the rarest and most beautiful trees of the tropics'
