Lot Essay

These chairs are closely related to a set of fourteen George III mahogany dining-chairs sold from the collection of the late Miss C. E. Godman, O.B.E., South Lodge, Lower Beeding, Sussex, Christie's house sale, 16-17 July 1984, lot 97. They were formerly in the possession of Frederick Du Cane Godman of South Lodge, the very distinguished natural historian. Godman published the Biologia Centrali Americane and his magnificent collection of Iznik, Persian and Hispano-Mauresque pottery was bequeathed to the British Museum by his daughters. Another suite with more elaborate carving, comprising nine chairs, an armchair and a pair of settees were sold in these Rooms, 12 May 1955, lot 20, the property of Col. The Lord Joicey, D.S.O., removed from Etal Manor, Ford, Northumberland.
