Lot Essay

A similar set of eight Regency ebonised and gilded chairs was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 15 January 1970, lot 22 and is illustrated in G. Beard & J. Goodison, English Furniture 1500-1840, Oxford, 1987, p.261, fig.8.

Henry Whitaker illustrated a related Grecian chair with lyre-back of klismos form in Designs of Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture in the Most Modern Style, 1825 (see: E. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Designs, Woodbridge, 1977, p.215).
