c.1938 BROUGH SUPERIOR FOUR-SEATER DROPHEAD
COACHWORK BY ATCHERLEY OF BIRMINGHAM
Registration No. BWD 620 (not currently registered)
Chassis No. CH/6D/7144943
Engine No. 316718
Engine: six-cylinder, side valve, 3445cc, compression ratio 7:1, bore and stroke 76.2mm x 127mm, 107bhp at 4000rpm. Transmission: four speed manual. Suspension: semi-elliptic. Brakes: four-wheel drum. Wheelbase: 9'8". Right hand drive.
After building up a considerable reputation as a motorcycle manufacturer, George Brough proceeded to build a number of cars bearing his name between 1935 and 1939. In concept these followed the then popular practice of combining a powerful American power unit with a comparatively light chassis, but his formulation was considerably more successful than most. The engines were of Hudson manufacture in straight six and eight cylinder form. After 1939 Brough turned to precision engineering and the car business ceased.
This Brough Superior is listed with the Brough Owners Club and is apparently one of only 18 remaining out of the 75 Hudson engined cars produced. It is fitted with the standard four-seater drophead coachwork by Atcherley and finished in black with green leather upholstery.
The car is in need of total restoration, however it appears to be complete. Only a trumpet horn and a side lamp are missing. The aluminium coachwork is in reasonable condition although the boot lid and passenger door are not attached. There is a complete set of hub caps and a spare wheel. The chassis and frame appear to be sound and the car has evidently been dry stored for a number of years. The engine is complete and original to the car, but has seized through standing.
This restoration project will reward its new owner with a most rare and desirable British touring car of the post vintage thoroughbred era.
