Lot Essay

This fountain made during the 1880's, was probably designed by John Broad. The child figures in particular, with their facial expressions are of his style. The pelicans are similar to those he incorported in a candlestick, illustrated in Desmond Eyles, Royal Doulton 1815-1965, London 1965, p. 81. The water creatures on the base may well have been taken from moulds made for George Tinworth's 'Old & New Testament Fountain' which was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1878.
