Lot Essay

The tale of Creugante is taken from Pausania, and that following the Nemian Games, there was no unanimous victor. It was decided therefore, that each competitor should box with each other, but that only one punch was allowed. In the contest between Damosseno and Siracusa, against the contestants' rules, Damosseno killed Siracussa by pulling out his entrails. The referee was so shocked at this, that he exiled Damosseno, and a statue of Creugante was positioned in the Temple of Jupiter Liceo in Arcadia.
A marble version of this figure is in the Vatican Museum.
