The 'Società Anonima Antonio Volpe Fabbrica Italiana di Mobili in Legno Curvato', was founded in Udine by Antonio Volpe in 1883. By the end of the century the factory was producing between twenty and forty thousand chairs per annum, all for the Italian market.
The reduced design of this chair, whilst acknowledging an influence from the designs of Kohn and Thonet, marks a distinct development from the more elaborate scrolled forms of its 19th century precursors.
