Lot Essay

This design follows closely that for the 'Greek Armchair', produced by Godwin for William Watt, and featured in The Building News, May 29 1885 (reproduced left). Most notable parallels are the mushroom shape of the feet and the form and proportion of the uprights. In The Building News of December 18 1885, Watt featured a similar simple Greco-Egyptian chair designed by Godwin, under the heading 'Inexpensive Furniture', presumably to be made in oak. This latter design also concurs with the present chair in the pad finial to the uprights.
Cf: Gere and Whiteway, pl. 191, p. 155, comparable chair by Godwin illustrated.
