Lot Essay

The designer of this chair was clearly familiar with Dresser's work. The incised details on the legs of the chairs, whilst somewhat simple, are comparable to the detailing on several chairs Dresser designed for the Art Funisher's Alliance. More direct is the influence of Dresser's decorative designs; the form of the sides of the chair is remarkably close to a simple repeating design for a border ornament published in Dresser's Studies in Design, (1874-6), reproduced opposite.
