Lot Essay

This chair was originally designed for the breakfast room of the Kaiser Suite on the Kronprinzessin Cecilie ocean liner. Riemerschmid, Paul and Olbrich were the only artists from outside Bremen (the ship's home port), who were invited to contribute to its interior design. In reports of the finished scheme, Riemerschmid's breakfast room was singled out for special mention: 'There is a very personal romance in the mood of this small room, which none of the other designers of the first-class cabins has been able to match' (Dekorative Kunst, Vol. 16, 1908, p. 86).
