Lot Essay

Charles Grant (1836-1903) was the brother of Sir Robert Grant (see lot ). He entered the Bengal Civil Service in 1858 and was appointed a commissioner of the central provinces in 1870. In 1880 he was acting secretary to the Government of India for the home revenue and agricultural departments, and the following year was appointed Foreign Secretary to the Government of India. He died in London on 10 April 1903.

He married firstly Ellen, daughter of Henry Baillie of Red Castle; and after her death in 1885, he married Lady Florence Lucia, daughter of Admiral Sir Edward Alfred John Harris.
