The 'Chaise Sandows' was the most successful of Herbst's designs in metal, and the first to incorporate the highly effective elastic expanders (Fr. sandows, already widely in use in luggage racks and sporting equipment), in order to achieve maximum comfort and simplicity. The first interior into which the chair was incorporated was Herbst's scheme for the apartment of M. Peissi in 1929 (reproduced right), and was often exhibited in subsequent years including at the UAM Salon d'Automne, Paris, 1934, (scheme for the cabin on a luxury liner), and the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs à Bruxelles, 1935 (apartment for a young gentleman.)
