Lot Essay

In 1954, Noguchi, inspired by polyurethane basins he had seen on a recent trip to Japan, designed a prototype rocking stool with the intention of producing it in plastic. He showed the wooden prototype to the furniture manufacturer, Hans Knoll, who liked it and suggested the use of a wire base 'à la Bertoia'. The resulting wood and steel rocking stool reveals Noguchi's desire to be 'an interpreter of the East to the West', while its balanced tension is highly characteristic of his sculptures. Production of this stool ceased in 1957.
