Lot Essay

The eccentric spirit of Fornasetti's designs, with their surreal trompe-l'oeil decoration, exerted a strong influence on the Italian Anti-Design movement of subsequent decades. By applying classical motifs onto modern forms, Fornasetti offered a cynical comment on what he saw as the elevation and pretensions of both academic art and Modernism.
