Lot Essay

Arad's 'Volume' series began in 1988 with the Big Easy Collection and culminated in 1991 with the factory-produced, brightly coloured and upholstered Spring Collection. The unusual and meticulously finished forms of the chairs from the 'Volume' series derive from Arad's exploration of the opposing concepts of empty and full, soft and hard, and light and heavy, and the series has become the best known of Arad's work. The individual elements of the chairs from the studio-produced series, of which the present piece is one, are cut from a flat pattern and then beaten and welded together by hand, thus producing chairs which each have their own individual character.
