This 13th century cottage is one of the oldest of its type to be seen in the village of Chiddingfold. Helen Allingham painted it twice; the other picture, dated 1885, appears in M.B. Huish, The Happy England of Helen Allingham, 1903, pl. 43. When the cottage was painted it was inhabited by Mr. Tom Sadler and his family who were suppliers of milk to the village
