Lot Essay

No doubt painted during Crane's visit to Betwys-y-Coed in the late summer of 1869. 'The scenery was extremely pretty', he recalled, 'but the lines of the mountains generally (were) rather broken and cut up, and not so fine and sweeping as my favourite Derbyshire hills' (An Artist's Reminiscences, 1907, p.101)
