Lot Essay

This mahogany library table with panther footed bracket and indented corners designed in the French Grecian manner and enriched with palmettes, features in George Smith's designs of 1808 (see The Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge 1977, p. 339).

The imbricated brass grilles relate to a design by Thomas Hope, published in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration,
London 1807, plate 11.
