Lot Essay

The festive husk-festooned medallion of an urn-bearing matron pouring a libation on an alter represents 'a sacrifice on the alter of love', in the manner of Angelica Kauffman. The neo-classical ornament relates to patterns published by M. Pergolesi in his Designs for Various Ornaments, 1784, plate 52
