Lot Essay

This chimneypiece, designed in the Palladian manner, was intended to evoke a festive spirit with its floral garlands and oak leaves, emblematic of hospitality.

In the 18th century, Clayton Hall belonged to the Lomax family. The central block of the house is thought to date from the second quarter of the eighteenth century, although this was substantially remodelled and extended by James Lomax in 1772.
