Lot Essay

First trained as an engraver, Emil Kellermann later studied sculpture at the Berlin Academy. While working in Nuremberg he developed his skills as a sculptor in ivory and in 1910 founded his own firm to that purpose. During this latter period he studied for three years with Friedrich Adler, (see lot 375) who had moved from Hamburg to a post at the Arts and Crafts Museum in Nuremberg previously held by Riemerschmid and Behrens. Kellermann is acknowledged as one of Adler's most important students.
