Lot Essay

On Lord Burlington's death in 1753, his riverside villa passed to Lord Hartington (4th Duke of Devonshire, 1755).
The wings of Chiswick House were probably designed by John White
for the 5th Duke of Devonshire in 1788. They were demolished in 1952. The designs by White exist at the Royal Institute of British Architects Drawings Collection.
