Edward Cheney's collection probably contained four albums: two of standing figures and two of figures for ceilings. One of these entitled sole figure vestite is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the other three were sold at Christie's in 1914 and purchased by Edward Parsons & Son who broke them up and sold the drawings in the 1920s. From the surviving drawings it is evident that one of these albums was sole figure vestite and the remaining two sole figure per soffitti. The present drawing is from the latter group. Although difficult to date as none are related specifically to painted works, Professor Knox has suggested a date of circa 1758-60. During this period Tiepolo suffered attacks of gout, and Knox suggests the drawings may have been done while the artist was incapacitated and solely for his pleasure
