The present drawing was executed by Wille whilst on a sketching trip with his eldest son, his pupil Parizeau, and the painters Bander, Freudeberg and Dunker in August and September 1766. The group left Paris on 31 August and arrived in Sceaux-les-Chartreux the same day. The following day they departed but spent the night in 'la plus misérable auberge qui existe peut-être en France; les paux qu'il avoit nous inspirerènt d'en partir vers l'après midi'. Thus they returned to Sceaux-les-Chartreux and Villers where they spent two days. Wille notes the warm welcome he and his companions received there mentioning in his journal 'les habitants de ces endroits nous aiment beaucoup', Wille, op.cit., p. 330. The present sheet was probably drawn on this second visit to Sceaux-les-Chartreaux
