Lot Essay

Both Mattingly (BMCRE. p.clxii and Roman Coins p.106), and Sutherland (E. and C. pp.64 ff.), argue that the earliest issues of Caligula with bare head and rather untidy lettering, were struck at Lugdunum, while later issues with laureate head and neater lettering with serifs were all struck at Rome. J-B Giard (RN.1976 pp.69 ff.), however argues that the Lugdunum mint continued in operation throughout the reign.
