Lot Essay

Coins of Macrinus are very rare in gold, and scarce in other metals. This type, dated to December 217 by the reverse legend, is recorded only in silver. The same type but with the reverse reading COS II, a title which Macrinus assumed on 1 January 218, is known in gold.
