Each with Nike supporting a florally-rimmed bowl with laurel-wreathed heads issuing two tiers of scrolling branches from foliage and terminating in foliate drip-pans, on a circular spreading and stiff-leaf rimmed shaft supported by three sphinxes on a part-marbelised concave-sided canted triangular plinth decorated on two sides by two chimerae centred by a vase of flowers and the angles headed by a ram's head, on three foliate lion paw feet, refreshments to decoration, restorations, previously fitted for electricity

Lot Essay

Two torchères of similar form, with related black and gilt figures suporting a dish issuing candlebranches and standing on black and gilt supports, are in the Schloss Ehrenburg, Coburg, in the 'Zweites Holzzimmer' (G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1973, vol. III, fig. 508). An étagère with similar winged figure supports was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 19 May 1994, lot 146.
