Lot Essay

This pair of chairs, with Grecian-scrolled feet, arched and rounded 'tablet' cresting and curved backs springing from voluted scrolls, corresponds to the form of a chair illustrated in an early 19th Century watercolour (T. Sokolova, Russian Furniture in the Hermitage, Leningrad, 1973, fig. 107). A related set of four bergères from the collection of Rudolf Nureyev collection was sold in these Rooms, 21 November 1995, lot 1137.
