Lot Essay

This mirror bears to the reverse the specialist mirror-maker's guild stamp. Every mirror to be sold on the open market that had passed the guild's quality controls was marked with this stamp, together with the year.

A mirror also bearing the guild stamp of 1765 and of identical shape and size but with slightly varying decoration to the mirrored border panels was sold anonymously at Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, 1 March, 1995, lot 975.

A test undertaken on the gilding has revealed that there is no further decoration beneath the present gilding. The present gilding would, therefore appear to be original.
