Lot Essay

This fauteuil relates to a fauteuil designed and made by Louis-Edouard Lemarchand (d. 1872) in 1825-1830 (D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 416). A very similar fauteuil with nearly identical back and slightly outwards-swept legs is illustrated in G. Janneau, Les Sièges, Paris, 1967, p. 205). A pair of nearly identical shape was sold anonymously at Sotheby's Monaco, 9 December 1995, lot 241.
