The rectangular top above a moulded serpentine-fronted rectangular hinged writing-slope enclosing a fitted interior with brown leather-lined writing-surface, seven serpentine-fronted drawers, one fitted with pen-trays and eight pigeon-holes above a sliding well, together with three secret drawers, the waved apron enclosing two further drawers, the sides and reverse similarly veneered, on cabriole legs headed by asymmetrical C-scroll, acanthus and rockwork mounts, on foliate-cast sabots, with handwritten label to the underside 'John Clerk Esq Penicuick House Edinburgh'
