A NORTH ITALIAN WALNUT AND MARQUETRY COMMODE
Late 18th early 19th Century
The rectangular top with central circular foliate medallion within a rectangular stiff-leaf frieze, above a frieze-drawer with pearled garlands and vases of flowers and two further drawers inlaid sans traverse with a medallion of a townscape within a stiff-leaf border, flanked by columns of vases and foliage, the sides with conforming medallions on square tapering legs with trailing decoration, restorations and distressed, with traces of old paper label to the reverse

Lot Essay

The swags on the frieze-drawer, as well as the landscape in the medallion of this commode relate to to those on a bedside commode attributed to Giuseppe Maggiolini in a private collection in Milan (S. Colombo, L'Arte del Legno e del Mobile in Italia, Turin, 1981, fig. 575).
