A GERMAN FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN with swamped octagonal sighted barrel, iron saddle back-sight with chiselled foliate finials, signed rounded lock with moulded border (jaw screw and mainspring incomplete), moulded figured walnut full stock (probably replaced during the gun's working life) carved in relief with scrolls inhabited by scenes of the chase on the fore-end and cheek-piece, and below the butt, and with scrolls and foliage at the barrel tang, iron mounts chiselled in relief with scrolling foliage, pierced scrolled side-plate involving two monster-heads, pierced vacant escutcheon with grotesque masks above and two confronted marine monsters beneath, butt-plate with long foliate tang, turned bulbous ramrod-pipes (two chipped), the tail-pipe with long foliate finial, iron fore-end cap, and associated wooden ramrod, by Michael Meckelen of Cologne, circa 1690
