A FINE GERMAN SPORTING RIFLE with swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with twelve alternating broad and narrow grooves and struck at the breech with the Strasburg mark (Neue Støckel 1633) and barrelsmith's mark of Lorenz Helbe of Strasburg (Neue Støckel 487), the back-sight with pierced and chiselled finial, engraved signed rounded lock with moulded border, chiselled cock and steel, figured walnut full stock (fore-stock cracked) carved in relief with scrollwork and foliage on the fore-stock, behind the barrel-tang, on the patch-box cover and cheek-piece, and below the butt, chiselled iron mounts including pierced scrolled side-plate, butt-plate with bulbous heel and long tang, and spurred trigger-guard with grotesque finial, safety-catch chiselled with a grotesque mask, set trigger, turned iron ramrod-pipes (tail-pipe finial defective), reeded iron fore-end cap, and horn-tipped ramrod, the crowned escutcheon chiselled in relief with the arms of Salm-Reifferscheidt, by Matthias Weins in Cölln, circa 1700
