A RARE ALSATIAN SNAPLOCK SPORTING RIFLE with boldly swamped barrel rifled with seven grooves and struck at the breech with Strasburg mark (Neue Støckel 1633) and barrelsmith's mark (Neue Støckel 7423), signed rounded lock engraved with scrolling flowers and foliage and struck with a further Strasburg mark on the outside and a further maker's mark on the inside, the cock held by the external dog catch at half-cock, and at full cock by an unusual horizontally working sear mechanism (sear spring missing, steel-spring defective), figured walnut full stock (cracked and repaired in front of the lock, fore-end chipped) carved in relief with scrollwork, foliage, and a grotesque mask on the fore-end, with flowers and foliage behind the barrel tang, and a winged dragon and foliage opposite the lock, the butt inlaid with engraved staghorn panels including a boar-hunt on the cheek-piece, and carved with stylised mermaids and a marine centaur, the patch-box cover (chipped) with fronds involving a hound and a boar, iron mounts, set trigger, and engraved horn fore-end cap (ramrod-pipe and ramrod missing), by Hans Martin Freytag of Strasburg, third quarter of the 17th Century 33¾in. barrel [E.268, S.19]
