A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE with heavy swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves and struck with a mark at the breech (touch-hole altered), flat lock struck with a mark, a crowned fish, on a shield, and with domed wheel-cover, full stock (fore-end chipped) profusely inlaid with staghorn plaques mostly pierced and finely engraved with foliage, scrolls, strapwork, fruit, a bear, and a townscape, all with horn lines, the background enriched with staghorn scrolls and pellets, behind the barrel tang a small engraved staghorn plaque with the stockmaker's initials AW, at the ramrod entry a plaque finely engraved with a halberdier, and on the cheek-piece a crowned coat-of-arms, engraved horn butt-plate (damaged), ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap, iron trigger-guard, set trigger, and associated horn-tipped ramrod (some inlay missing, patch-box cover replaced), early 17th Century

The arms on the cheek-piece are those of Wolfgang Wilhelm, Count Palatine of the Rhine (1578-1658)

The stock inlay is reminiscent of the work of Melchart Schuster of Vienna, master in 1593
