The landmark in the history of the Riley was the famous Nine introduced in 1929. Its engine was the classic twin high camshaft with hemispherical combustion chambers, a design which characterised Riley engines for the next thirty years. This engine was later developed in six cylinder form and contributed much to the success of ERA racing engines, and therefore British prestige. Riley themselves also achieved sporting success and throughout the thirties was a sporting name to be reckoned with.

The Special on offer today is typical of the many racing derivatives based upon Riley donar vehicles. We believe this vehicle started life as an Adelphi saloon and is presently fitted with a Kestral 1½-litre engine. These 12/4 engines are the same basis from which the original race modified units were built. Based upon the low slung two seater racing shape reminiscent of the Dixon Specials, this car has a blue fabric covered body. We are unsure of any known racing results of this Special, but the evidence of old racing numbers and the four Amal carburettor set up suggests it was campaigned. The car has been in storage since the early 1970s and recently the engine was made to run again. It has a pre-selector gearbox. It has no road equipment, but certainly offers the new purchaser with a limited budget, the opportunity to enter the thrills and spills of VSCC racing.
