Lot Essay

The baluster's vertical and horizontal reeded ribbon-bands and tripod base with scroll feet embellished with Grecian palmettes in ormolu reflect the French 'antique' style popularised by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, and its base derives in particular from his tripod stand illustrated, ibid., pl. XXXII
