A jewelled gold, enamel and hardstone fob-seal
Probably German, mid-18th century
The handle formed as a turbaned Blackamoor, his head carved from onyx, his robe chased with swirling bands of simulated embroidery with alternate black enamel panels set with ruby and split pearls, the chased border similarly set, the agate matrix carved with leaves
1 5/8in. (4cm.) high

Lot Essay

There is a similar seal in the collection of Victoria & Albert Museum, acquisition no. 2286-1855, which was originally catalogued as Italian but was recently re-catalogued as German, 3rd quarter of the 18th century.
