Veuve-Clicquot, Dry--Vintage 1923
Bottles and labels very bin-soiled. A few levels just below base of foil
The period from 1919 to 1929 was a splendid decade for champagne and particularly successful for Clicquot. As in Burgundy, 1923 was a high quality, if small vintage. It is now scarce. This particular stock was originally given to the club by a former member and has lain undisturbed.
Tasting note: level one, just above base of foil, cork firm, glorious warm bright amber, still - no sparkle; characteristic sweet, smoky old-straw bouquet; dry yet rich mouth-filling acidity. Level two, just below the bottom of the foil, fractionally paler and with more of a carbon dioxide prickle in the mouth. Both clean and drinking well though enlivened by adding a good non-vintage, half and half, in the glass
